Google's New Pixel Buds Pro 2 Review: Sleeker Design and Improved Comfort
Struggling to find the perfect earbuds that don't feel like I'm shoving pebbles in my ear canals? The Pixel Buds Pro 2 may be the answer! After years of searching, I finally got my hands on these miniaturized earbuds from Google, specifically designed for a comfy fit in my... less symmetrical lobes.
Google clearly aimed to create their own version of the AirPods Pro 2 for the Pixel ecosystem. Let's see if they managed to make it ring true or not. The Pixel Buds Pro 2 will set you back $230, but hey, at least they feel like utterly different earpieces. Each bud weights a mere 4.7 grams, significantly lighter than the old buds that weighed 6.3 grams.
The new earbuds have moved on from the odd, bulbous form factor of the previous version to something more akin to the cozy Samsung Galaxy Buds FE. Google initially offered only three tip sizes with the first model, but this time they've offered a full variety between extra large and small.
To make these earbuds even more comfortable, Google has incorporated a semicircular stabilizer fin that better secures them in your ears. You aren't supposed to leave the wings inside your ears constantly. Google suggests that you can turn them around for activities that might jostle your head, and they will snap back into place when you want some cozy comfort. Personally, I found them to sit comfortably in my ears, and I couldn't imagine my daily commute without them.
When it comes to sound quality, Google promises the Pixel Buds Pro 2 will have superior bass and treble, thanks to its 11mm drivers. They also claim the ANC will adapt to your environment far faster than before and even detect if you start having a conversation, so it will lower the noise cancellation for you.
Google has packed the Pixel Buds Pro 2 with impressive features. The case is weighty, smooth, and comes with an enjoyable, snappy hinge. Google's AI is working overtime here, aiming to create a product that operates as an AI device similar to the Humane AI pin or the Rabbit R1. However, these devices haven't exactly been shining stars lately, due in part to the slow pace and finicky nature of their operations, compared to the speedier abilities of modern smartphones. Google warns that this feature requires a stable, consistent internet connection, and most AI processes will still happen in the cloud, despite the Pixel's powerful neural processing capabilities.
Google also promises a better battery life compared to the first Pixel Buds Pro. You can expect up to 8 hours of listening time with ANC on and up to 30 hours with the charging case. That's a whopping 10 hours more battery life than the first Pixel Buds Pro could manage before needing a top-up. While using ANC, you'll get around 12 hours from the earbuds alone and up to 48 hours with the charging case, without the ANC.
