Google has rolled out an update that enhances how it handles URL changes. This improvement directly benefits website owners and users alike.

Previously, when a webpage's URL was altered, Google would create a news from the old URL to the new one. This was done to maintain the site's search engine optimization (SEO) value and prevent broken links. However, this process also led to unnecessary redirects, which could slow down site performance.

The latest update, implemented by Google itself, now automatically updates internal links to point directly to the new URL. This change reduces the need for redirects, improving site speed and enhancing the reader's experience. Before this update, clicking on internal links would often route users through a redirect, even after the URL had changed.

This update, part of Google's September 2025 search results changes, directly benefits website owners and users. It reduces unnecessary redirects, improves site performance, and enhances the reader's experience by automatically updating internal links to point to the new URL.
