Honda Shifts Focus to Hybrids, Unveils New Electric SUV & Prototype at Tokyo Show

Honda has shifted its focus from electric vehicles (EVs) to hybrid powertrains, reducing its investment in EV news development. The Japanese automaker will unveil new models at the Tokyo Motor Show, including a radical electric SUV and a fun-to-drive small electric news prototype.

Honda has announced a significant reduction in its planned spend on EV news development, cutting it by £15.4 billion to £51 billion. This change in strategy favours hybrid powertrains over fully electric vehicles. Despite this, the company will showcase innovative electric models at the Tokyo Motor Show.

The new electric SUV, now officially named the Honda e:Ny1, will be shorter and lower-set than the 0 SUV, featuring a distinctive curved roofline. It is part of the 0 Series, which will also include the 0 Saloon and 0 SUV, planned for launch in the US next year with a global roll-out to follow.

Honda will also display a new, more affordable SUV model in the 0 Series at the Tokyo show. This model is designed to be 'fun to drive', building on Honda's reputation for engaging driving experiences. The prototype, based on the Super EV concept, is currently being tested in markets with strong demand for small EVs, indicating a global focus for this news model.

Honda's new electric SUV, the e:Ny1, and the upcoming small electric news prototype demonstrate the company's commitment to electric vehicles, despite its reduced investment in EV news development. The Tokyo Motor Show will provide a glimpse into Honda's future electric lineup, with models designed to be engaging and accessible.
