Düsseldorf's Mobility Partnership Gains Traction in Pursuit of Sustainable Transportation

In an effort to minimize carbon dioxide emissions primarily attributed to vehicular mobility, the city of Düsseldorf, along with local businesses and stakeholders, has launched an initiative known as the Mobility Partnership. This collaborative project aims to promote eco-friendly mobility and reduce traffic-related pollution, focusing on a myriad of strategies, including lessening car dependence, promoting electric vehicles, and optimizing logistics.

Environment Commissioner Jochen Kral emphasized the importance of this joint initiative, stating, "Without the collaborative efforts of the chambers and businesses, a sustainable mobility partnership cannot be realized." Similarly, Andreas Schmitz, President of IHK Düsseldorf, praised the Mobility Partnership for preventing driving bans, while Andreas Ehlert, President of the Chamber of Crafts, underscored the necessity of coordination between traffic needs and the economy to secure the city's supply.

The Master of the Association of Craftsmen, Michael Kregel, acknowledged that the transformation towards greener mobility cannot occur overnight, as suitable alternatives may not always be readily available on the market or may lack technical reliability. However, the craft industry remains committed to its role in climate protection. Many member companies have already shifted parts of their fleet to low-emission vehicles, encompassing electric cars, electric bicycles, and electric cargo bikes. Furthermore, they have gained valuable insights into topics such as route optimization, construction site supply, job bikes, and ticket programs for apprentices and employees.

It is crucial to recognize that the city's ambitious goal of reducing CO₂ emissions from transport requires the collective effort of both businesses and city actors. By working together, the Mobility Partnership aims to create a more sustainable future for Düsseldorf and its residents.
