Inside Meta's Significant $72 Billion Wager on AI and the Metaverse Realm
Meta, the tech giant behind Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, is making a bold move into the realm of artificial intelligence (AI). The company's CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, has announced a dedicated "Superintelligence Labs" unit and a massive investment of hundreds of billions of dollars to lead the AI arms race.
Investing in AI Infrastructure
Meta's strategy includes a significant investment in AI infrastructure. The company plans to spend between $60 billion and $72 billion on capital expenditures for 2025 alone. This investment will help build AI supercomputing centers like Project Prometheus in Ohio, targeted at 1 gigawatt, and the Hyperion cluster in Louisiana, aiming to scale up to a massive 5 gigawatts. These centers are designed to run next-generation AI models at scale.
Talent Acquisition and Open-Source Models
In addition to infrastructure, Meta is aggressively acquiring AI talent. The company has poached top researchers and engineers from competitors such as Apple, OpenAI, Google DeepMind, and Anthropic. Meta is also focusing on open-source AI models, such as the Llama series, to attract a broad developer base and position itself as a leader in developer-friendly AI ecosystems.
The AI Arms Race
Meta's approach stands out compared to rivals like OpenAI, Google DeepMind, and European players like Mistral AI. While OpenAI focuses on creating advanced generative AI models and positioning itself as AI's leading innovator, Google DeepMind pursues AGI via foundational research and integration with its extensive ecosystem. European players, on the other hand, emphasize home-grown innovation and regulatory alignment.
The Future of AI at Meta
Meta's AI ambitions go beyond software intelligence. The company envisions AI as foundational technology for immersive digital experiences, merging AI with augmented and virtual reality to reshape digital interaction. This dual focus suggests Meta sees AI not just as software but as a key technology for its metaverse ambitions.
In Q2 of 2025, Meta poured $17 billion into AI infrastructure. The company has also integrated AI into its hardware division, with Ray-Ban glasses now incorporating an AI assistant. Meta AI is now integrated across Instagram, WhatsApp, and the Meta app, reaching 1.5 billion active users.
The Risks and Rewards of Superintelligence
Zuckerberg has been open about the risks associated with superintelligence. In a blog post detailing his vision for "personal superintelligence," he stated that they will need to be rigorous about mitigating these risks and careful about what they choose to open source. He also cautioned that superintelligence will bring new and novel concerns.
Despite these risks, Zuckerberg believes the benefits of superintelligence should be shared with the world as broadly as possible. He devoted most of Meta's Q2 earnings call to AI, and he has released a blog post detailing his vision for personal superintelligence. The latest pivot into AI is a high-stakes gamble, but it could potentially secure Meta's dominance beyond its current social media business.
Meta is also intensifying efforts to recruit AI talent from rivals. The company launched a new division called Meta Superintelligence Labs in June, and Meta's Prometheus cluster is scheduled to come online next year, aiming to be the world's first 1GW+ cluster. With a total capital expenditure for 2025 potentially reaching $72 billion, Meta is clearly committed to its AI ambitions.
