Interview with Artist Conducted by Anna Terebelo, Editor

Anna Terebelo, a talented editor with credits on shows like Marvel's Agents of Shield and The Villains of Valley View, has made a significant impact in the world of scripted television. Her work journey began in Los Angeles, where she moved without a job, determined to make a name for herself in the industry.

After starting as a post production assistant, Terebelo spent her time learning from assistant editors and reading books on editing. Her hard work paid off when she landed her first assistant editor job after about a year.

In her career, Terebelo has used various Boris FX tools, including Continuum and Sapphire, to enhance her projects. These tools have become staples in the post-production workflows of many editors in scripted television.

Key Boris FX Tools in Scripted TV Editing

Continuum

Continuum is a comprehensive plugin collection highly favoured for tasks like motion graphics, stylized transitions, colour correction enhancements, and advanced keying. Its Depth Map ML feature, which uses AI to generate depth mattes automatically for relighting and colour grading without manual masking, is particularly useful for fast-paced scripted editing.

Sapphire

Known for its high-end visual effects, Sapphire plugins are employed for sophisticated light effects, glows, lens flares, stylized looks, and image restoration. They are commonly used to enhance mood, atmosphere, and visual impact in scripted narratives.

Mocha Pro

Mocha Pro, valued for its unparalleled planar motion tracking and masking, is essential for tracking objects, rotoscoping, and applying effects with precision. This tool dramatically speeds up workflows for effects integration and cleanup tasks in complex scenes.

Frequently Used Effects and Features

  • 3D Camera Tracking & Stabilization (SynthEyes integration): Precise 3D tracking capabilities help integrate visual effects seamlessly with live-action footage, maintaining spatial consistency.
  • VHS and Analog Damage Effects (Optics): For stylistic choices or flashbacks, Optics offers filters like S_TVDamage to simulate VHS artifacts such as static, scanlines, colour distortion, and noise—adding authentic retro looks which may be used creatively in scripted shows.
  • AI-Powered Depth Mattes (Continuum Depth Map ML): This innovative feature automates depth-based effects like selective relighting and colour correction, increasing efficiency for editors by eliminating manual rotoscoping or masking.
  • Film Grain & Damage Effects (Optics): To add texture and natural film qualities, Optics applies various grain and damage overlays, useful for period pieces or stylistic treatments.
  • Planar Tracking and Masking (Mocha Pro): Enables precise isolation and manipulation of objects or areas, critical for effects compositing, object removal, or selective colour grading.
  • Lens Flares and Light Effects (Sapphire): Widely used to craft cinematic lighting effects that enhance the storytelling atmosphere.

In professional scripted television editing environments, these Boris FX tools are often integrated within non-linear editors like Avid Media Composer, DaVinci Resolve, or Adobe Premiere, providing editors with powerful capabilities to enhance narrative storytelling through visual effects and image manipulation.

When asked about her favourite films and TV series, Terebelo mentioned Brooklyn 99, Friends, Schitt's Creek, Sex Education, Shameless, The Handmaid's Tale, The Perks of Being a Wallflower, Titanic, I, Tonya, Schindler's List, Star Wars, Harry Potter, and more. If given the opportunity, she would like to collaborate with Wendy Hallam Martin, Stephen Spielberg, Tatiana Maslany, and Quinta Brunson.

For artistic inspiration, Terebelo watches a lot of TV and listens to movie scores. When feeling creative burnout, she takes walks, listens to podcasts, and paints. During long sessions, she stays fueled with water, almonds, and office snacks like apple/peanut butter bites.

Terebelo advises her younger self to be patient, maintain work/life balance, and take regular walks. She is currently based in Los Angeles and continues to make her mark in the world of scripted television editing.
