Technical Relief Agency (THW) Deploys Volunteers to Support Berlin During Power Outage

The Technical Relief Agency (THW), a federally funded operational organisation, has mobilised over 300 volunteers in Berlin to assist with the ongoing power outage. The THW, known for its network of approximately 88,000 volunteers nationwide, is providing essential services to support civil protection efforts.

Sebastian Gold, the THW regional representative for Berlin, Brandenburg, and Saxony-Anhalt, has expressed his gratitude to the volunteers for their swift response and continuous aid. The THW has deployed specialists in electrical power supply, emergency supply and repair, logistics, and even catering for volunteers and refueling vehicles.

In an effort to aid affected citizens, the THW is operating information points, disaster protection lighting towers, and care points where people can charge their phones and make emergency calls. At the request of Deutsche Bahn, the THW has been illuminating four S-Bahn stations in the evenings and at night with light masts, including the S-Bahn station of Altglienicke on the night of Wednesday to Thursday.

Notable deployments include the provision of electricity to a nursing home and the health department in Treptow since the power outage began. Lessons learned from the major power outage in Köpenick in 2019 have been implemented this time, including the early deployment of disaster protection lighting towers in Berlin districts.

The situation for the THW is currently stable, and no major further requirements are expected at this time.
