Investigations Launched into Chinese Tech Companies Over Suspected Illegitimate Operations in Taiwan
Taiwan Investigates 16 Chinese Tech Companies for Illicit Activities
Taiwan is currently investigating 16 Chinese technology companies for allegedly setting up offices illegally in the country and hiring local staff without proper authorization. The companies, which include Lontium Semiconductor Corp, Cista Limited, Novosense Microelectronics Co, Chipone Technology (Beijing) Co, and Huntkey Group, are suspected of faking their business registrations to disguise their operations.
Between July 15 and August 6, 2025, Taiwanese investigators conducted raids on 70 locations and questioned around 120 people linked to these companies across Taipei, New Taipei City, Taoyuan, and Hsinchu. The investigation focuses on firms that have pretended to be branches of foreign or Taiwanese-invested companies to hide their true identity.
Cista Limited, for example, is suspected of using a Hong Kong-based company as a front to disguise itself as a foreign company and set up an office in Taiwan. Huntkey Group, one of the largest IT companies in China, is suspected of setting up a branch office in Taiwan under the guise of being based in Hong Kong.
The investigation has revealed that Chinese companies have targeted talent in related sectors in Taiwan, with Cista allegedly recruiting semiconductor talent and PC power supply engineers in Taiwan, while Huntkey is accused of illegally recruiting semiconductor talent.
The high-tech industry is considered the lifeblood of Taiwan's economy, and such actions by Chinese firms have seriously undermined the competitiveness of Taiwan's high-tech industry. The Ministry of Justice's Investigation Bureau is investigating the matter and has pledged to continue strict enforcement against unauthorized Chinese operations in Taiwan.
At this time, no specific penalties or charges against the companies or individuals under investigation have been specified. The article does not mention any response from the Chinese government or the Taiwanese government regarding this investigation.
