Connected Mobility Düsseldorf: Driving Smarter Mobility in the City

Düsseldorf, a city known for its vibrant lifestyle and bustling streets, is taking significant steps to improve its mobility infrastructure and promote sustainable, seamless transportation experiences. At the forefront of this transformation is Connected Mobility Düsseldorf GmbH (CMD), an organization dedicated to connecting and enhancing mobility within the city.

Founded in 2020, CMD's mission is to promote the connectivity of different modes of transportation, integrating various mobility services and solutions to create a more networked and efficient urban transport system. The company, headquartered at Carlsplatz 18, aims to simplify access and encourage environmentally friendly travel by digitally linking services like car-sharing, e-bike and e-car sharing systems, and public transport.

The chairman of CMD's supervisory board is Mayor Thomas Geisel, and the company is managed by two managing directors, Rolf Neumann and Dr. David Rüdiger, who have been active since August 1. Neumann, previously head of a department in the city administration of Düsseldorf, is responsible for mobility partnerships, electric mobility, and hydrogen, while Rüdiger brings expertise in scientific consulting and the implementation of diverse mobility and logistics projects in the national and international context.

One of CMD's key initiatives is the construction and operation of mobility hubs, also known as mobility stations. These hubs, intended to improve accessibility of destinations, especially for those without permanent car availability, aim to reduce disorderly parked rental offers on sidewalks and public streets. Long-term plans for these hubs include the construction of "White-Label package lockers" for provider-overarching solutions to the growing package flood in the city.

In addition to mobility hubs, CMD's fields of action include mobility data ecosystems, sensor-supported and smart parking solutions, and necessary smartphone applications and interfaces (Mobility-as-a-Service). The company is also involved in plans to expand and innovate Düsseldorf's mobility infrastructure by supporting new mobility concepts and integrating these with green and digital solutions. This aligns with broader trends in the region towards sustainable urban development and micro-living environments that emphasize easy access to shared, eco-friendly transport modes.

The city council approved the establishment of CMD in November 2019, and the company's evolving branding and mission underscore its role as a key player in Düsseldorf’s smart and green mobility transition. As the mobility demand in Düsseldorf continues to increase disproportionately to population growth, CMD is committed to organizing tomorrow's mobility more intelligently and efficiently.

The mobility transition is a key theme for Düsseldorf in the coming years, and with CMD leading the charge, the city is well on its way to becoming a model for sustainable urban mobility.
