Italian Sidi Shot 2S Review: Enduring design with a timeless Italian aesthetic, however, it falls short on finishing touches for optimal performance
The Sidi Shot 2S, the latest top-of-the-range offering from the renowned cycling shoe manufacturer, has made its mark in the world of road cycling. Replacing the Sidi Shot 2, this model boasts a host of innovative features designed to cater to the needs of serious cyclists.
The Sidi Shot 2S is built with a high-quality Bio Veg microfiber and mesh upper, providing a lightweight, breathable, and more environmentally friendly construction. This upper improves in comfort with use, mimicking the feel of a natural leather upper over time.
The shoe's performance emphasis lies in its stiffness and comfort, achieved through advanced tensioning and heel retention systems. The double dial closure system with Dyneema® cable allows for precise tensioning, while the adjustable Reflex heel retention device ensures a locked-in feel, particularly beneficial for those with narrow ankles.
The Sidi Shot 2S also features a C-Boost SRS sole, rated grade 10 on the brand's rigidity scale, making it the stiffest possible. This sole, along with the overall build, is designed for efficiency and power transfer.
However, the design of the dials on the Sidi Shot 2S places pressure on the top of the foot, which can cause discomfort during high-intensity efforts. Additionally, the Velcro on the tongue is not easy to lift and release, which might add to the initial challenges in mastering the shoe's complex closure system.
The Sidi Shot 2S comes in sizes from 38-48EU with half sizes, and five colour options. The shoe's upper is adorned with traditional reflective detailing and the Italian flag, adding a touch of style to its practical design.
Comparatively, other high-end road cycling shoes like the Shimano S-Phyre RC903 and the Sidi Tri-Sixty offer different closure systems and specialized features. For instance, the Shimano S-Phyre RC903 uses a single Boa Li2 dial + Velcro strap retention system, while the Sidi Tri-Sixty employs the Tecno-3 push dial system for fast transitions.
Despite its complexities, the Sidi Shot 2S stands out for its focus on fit customization, eco-friendly materials, and stiffness. However, its weight and the design of the dials may make it less practical for some users. Priced at £425, the Sidi Shot 2S is a luxury or "halo" shoe, catering to those who want a one-shoe solution for all conditions, with a focus on comfort and durability.
The Sidi Shot 2S's sole features electro nanofibre interlaminar reinforcement, with the toe and heel being replaceable, ensuring its durability and long-lastingness. Despite its high price and weight, the Sidi Shot 2S remains a competitive choice for serious cyclists seeking performance and sustainability, although some competing models offer simpler adjustment systems and additional ergonomic refinements.
