John Orcutt Named Inaugural Editor of AGU's New Journal, Earth and Space Science

John Orcutt, a distinguished scientist and engineer, has been appointed as the inaugural editor of the American Geophysical Union's (AGU) new open access, peer-reviewed journal, Earth and Space Science. This announcement marks a significant step forward in AGU's mission to promote open scientific research and foster interdisciplinary collaboration across Earth and space disciplines.

Orcutt, a recipient of several prestigious awards including the U.S. Navy/AGU's Ewing Medal, the American Association for the Advancement of Science's Newcomb-Cleveland Prize, and the Marine Technology Society's LockheedMartin Award for Ocean Science and Technology, brings a wealth of experience and expertise to his new role.

A graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy with a bachelor's in mathematics and physics, Orcutt furthered his education with a master's in physical chemistry as a Fulbright Scholar at the University of Liverpool and a Ph.D. in Earth sciences from UC San Diego. His research interests include the exploitation of information technology for the collection and processing of real-time environmental data, seismology in the oceans and on land, and marine geophysics.

Earth and Space Science, set to begin accepting papers in late summer 2014, will represent the expansive range of science that AGU covers, including Earth, planetary, and space sciences, environmental science, geoengineering, space engineering, and biogeochemistry. The journal will accept articles that meet AGU's high standards of excellence but do not fit the unique criteria of other journals.

In addition to Orcutt's appointment, Margaret Leinen, director of Scripps and UC San Diego's vice chancellor for marine sciences, has been named as AGU's president-elect. Leinen's leadership will undoubtedly contribute to the success of Earth and Space Science and further AGU's goal of advancing discovery and solution science that accelerates knowledge and develops ethical, unbiased solutions respectful of communities.

As the first issue of Earth and Space Science approaches, the scientific community eagerly awaits the publication of high-quality, peer-reviewed research addressing fundamental and applied topics in Earth and space sciences. This new journal promises to be a valuable addition to AGU's publishing portfolio and a significant contribution to the advancement of geoscience.
