Launch of BYD's Shark Hybrid Pickup Truck debuts in Pakistan's market

The Chinese automotive giant, BYD, has made its debut in Pakistan's new energy pickup truck market with the launch of the BYD Shark. The hybrid pickup truck, locally named BYD Shark 6, is priced at 19,950,000 Pakistani Rupees ($70,420), and is available in a single Premium variant [1].

BYD's entry into Pakistan marks a significant step in the company's global expansion strategy. The automaker is building a new assembly plant near Karachi, in partnership with Mega Motor Company, a subsidiary of Pakistani utility Hub Power. The plant, which is expected to have an annual production capacity of about 25,000 units running double shifts, will initially assemble imported parts, with some non-electric components made locally [1][2].

While the exact model of the electric vehicle that BYD plans to launch in Pakistan by July or August 2026 is not yet fully disclosed, the introduction of the BYD Shark could be a sign of the kind of vehicles BYD is positioning in the market. The BYD Shark is equipped with BYD's DMO technology, which stands for dual mode off-road [3].

The BYD Shark has been brought to several countries, including Brazil, Cambodia, Australia, and Peru. In China, the Atto 3 is known as the Yuan Plus, and the Sealion 6 is known as the Song Plus DM-i [1].

BYD launched three other models in Pakistan on August 17, 2024: the all-electric Atto 3, the Seal EV, and the hybrid Sealion 6 [1]. However, the Sealion 6 is currently unavailable on the MMC website.

This move aligns with BYD’s global expansion strategy amidst intense competition in China and leverages Pakistani government incentives to grow EV adoption in emerging markets [1][2].
