OpenAI could potentially release its language model before the anticipated GPT-5 launch, which is scheduled for August.

Launch of GPT-5 projected for August, while OpenAI's open-source language model supposedly set to arrive beforehand.

OpenAI's highly anticipated language model, GPT-5, is expected to be released in early August 2025, according to reports[1][2][3][4]. The model, a significant evolution of the classical GPT series, is set to integrate technology from OpenAI's "o-series", known for its logical reasoning capabilities.

The GPT-5 release will introduce three versions: a standard full model for ChatGPT and API users, a "mini" version available on both platforms, and a "nano" version offered exclusively through the API[2]. While specific features for the mini and nano versions have not been publicly detailed, the nano version will be available only via the API.

Preliminary reports and early testers suggest that GPT-5 excels in complex coding tasks, including academic and competitive programming challenges. It is also capable of updating large, outdated codebases more effectively than prior models or competitors like Claude Sonnet 4[2].

Rumours suggest that GPT-5 may unify multiple capabilities, such as memory, reasoning, vision, and task completion, into one unified model. Some internal experimental GPT-5 variants have shown very high math test scores, although the fully featured GPT-5 with "IMO gold level" capability may take longer to release[4].

It's worth noting that OpenAI is also planning to launch a new open-weight language model before the end of July, separate from the GPT-5 series. Details about this model, including its features and launch timing, have not been fully disclosed. The new open-weight language model will reportedly include reasoning skills and be available on platforms like Azure, Hugging Face, and other cloud services.

Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, discussed GPT-5 in a podcast with comedian Theo Von, describing it as a "here it is moment" and admitting feeling "useless relative to the AI."

Stay tuned for more updates as OpenAI continues to push the boundaries of artificial intelligence.
