LG Innotek collaborates with Aeva, a U.S.-based company, for advancements in LiDAR technology
In a significant move to shape the future of autonomous driving, LG Innotek, an affiliate of the LG Group, has entered into a strategic partnership with Aeva Technologies Inc., a US-based software company specializing in LiDAR technology. The partnership, announced in July 2025, aims to position both companies as leaders in the growing next-generation LiDAR market.
Under the agreement, LG Innotek will provide next-generation frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) LiDAR modules to Aeva. This partnership comes at a time when the next-generation LiDAR market is experiencing significant growth, driven by advances in 4D LiDAR technology.
Aeva's 4D LiDAR technology offers superior object detection capabilities and safety advantages critical for autonomous trucking and automotive applications. Unlike traditional time-of-flight LiDAR, Aeva's technology captures velocity as the fourth dimension along with distance, providing more comprehensive data for autonomous vehicles.
The strategic collaboration focuses on embedding the LiDAR chip directly in hardware to reduce costs and allow for scalable manufacturing via LG Innotek’s production capabilities. This collaboration is expected to help both companies grow in the next-generation LiDAR market, capitalizing on increased demand for high-performance perception systems in autonomous driving and potentially other sectors like consumer electronics.
As part of the partnership, LG Innotek will invest $50 million in the LiDAR business. This investment includes LG Innotek's acquisition of a 6 percent stake in Aeva. The joint development agreement is focused on co-developing next-generation FMCW LiDAR technologies for autonomous vehicles and robotics by 2027. The partnership aims to position LG Innotek and Aeva as leading players in the global LiDAR market by 2030.
Moon Hyuk-soo, CEO of LG Innotek, stated that this partnership is aimed at becoming leading players in the next-generation LiDAR market. Aeva will integrate these modules into their LiDAR solutions for global automakers, further enabling the mass-market deployment of these high-performance LiDAR systems.
The global LiDAR market is projected to grow at an average annual rate of 36 percent, reaching $15.4 billion by 2030 from $2.4 billion in 2024. This partnership highlights the broader trend of convergence between semiconductor manufacturing and advanced sensing technologies to drive the next wave of LiDAR commercialization and autonomous system deployment.
In summary, the partnership between LG Innotek and Aeva is set to revolutionize the LiDAR market by providing next-generation 4D LiDAR technology for autonomous vehicles. This collaboration is expected to lead to significant advancements in autonomous driving, contributing to a safer and more efficient future.
