Massive Funding Diverted Towards Ship Transformation Projects
The White Fleet in the Elbe Valley has announced that two of its historic paddle steamers, the MS "Countess Cosel" and MS "August the Strong," will undergo renovation. The renovation is part of the fleet's commitment to maintaining the historic character of its ships while updating facilities for comfort and modern amenities.
The renovation of the MS "Countess Cosel" is scheduled to begin in early January 2023 and is expected to take approximately four months. During this time, the interior spaces of the ship will be renewed, given a more modern design, and equipped with new furniture suitable for various purposes, including conference tables, bistro sets, and lounge furniture. The technology on board will also be modernized.
The cost for renovating each ship is 1.7 million euros. The MS "Countess Cosel" is expected to be ready for use by the 1st of May 2024, following a black and white colour scheme exterior change.
The MS "August the Strong" will follow the MS "Countess Cosel" in the renovation schedule, with work set to begin in winter 2024/25. However, specific details about the renovation of the MS "August the Strong" have not been provided, including construction time, modernization of technology, or changes in the exterior colour scheme.
Victor Straubhaar, Managing Director of the White Fleet GmbH, remains confident in the long-term usability of the ships. He stated that the ships will be completely renewed for their 30th anniversary. Despite the impact of low water levels in the summer of 2023, the ships will be prepared for future use and long-term operation.
The elaborate redesign of the MS "Countess Cosel" will mainly take place at the Laubegast shipyard. The White Fleet is investing millions in the renovation of the salon ships "Countess Cosel" and "August the Strong."
The nine historical ships of the White Fleet will not be redesigned and will retain their historical charm. After renovation, they will continue to serve as the modern flagship of the Dresden company.
Despite the lack of detailed information about the MS "August the Strong's" renovation plans, Victor Straubhaar expressed his confidence in the project's success. He emphasized that the fleet is committed to preserving the historic character of its ships while providing a comfortable and modern experience for its passengers.
