A local AI agent, HBO Max, has gained attention for its unique capabilities. The system, named after the '80s TV personality Max Headroom, is not just a local large language model but can complete tasks by making tool calls in a loop.
Developed by an unknown hobbyist, HBO Max is a wakeword-triggered AI agent capable of following spoken instructions. It can break down complex tasks into simpler steps, utilising software tools to complete them. The system's capabilities are demonstrated in a video available online.
The name HBO Max is a playful reference to Max Headroom, a computer-generated TV personality from the '80s. The use of the Max Headroom mask in a famous broadcast TV hack is also referenced in the project's name. HBO Max is an experiment and a demonstration of what can be achieved with open tools and hardware available to hobbyists.
