Jupiter Power and Consumers Energy Expand Battery Storage Capacity in Michigan

Jupiter Power, a leading player in the energy storage sector, has announced plans to advance the Voyager Battery Storage project in Saline Township, Michigan. This project, supported by a long-term power purchase agreement with Consumers Energy, is set to complement the already operational Tibbits Energy Storage Facility in Coldwater Township.

The Tibbits Energy Storage Facility, Michigan's first utility-scale battery energy storage system, went online earlier this summer. Operated by Jupiter Power, the facility has a capacity of 100 MW and a four-hour duration. According to Sri Maddipati, President of electric supply at Consumers Energy, the Tibbits project will help meet the increasing energy needs of Michigan residents.

The completion of the Tibbits project increases Jupiter's supply of reliable, flexible energy solutions. Consumers Energy, on the other hand, announced a long-term agreement to purchase 100 MW of capacity from the Tibbits Energy Storage Facility in June 2024. Together, the Tibbits and Voyager projects will help Consumers Energy meet growing customer demand and support grid reliability in Michigan.

Jupiter Power has more than 12 GW of new projects in development, and the Voyager project is one of them. This indicates continued expansion of Jupiter Power's battery storage projects in Michigan. If completed, the Voyager Battery Storage project will increase Jupiter Power's total battery storage projects in operation or under construction to over 4 GWh.

The Voyager Battery Storage project, like the Tibbits project, represents Jupiter Power and Consumers Energy's commitment to serving Michigan residents with power generated and stored in the state. If completed, the project will bring many benefits to the Saline Township community, similar to the benefits brought by the Tibbits Energy Storage Facility to Coldwater Township.

Consumers Energy plans to bring several large-scale battery projects online this decade. The Voyager Battery Storage project, if completed, will contribute to this plan. Furthermore, the further strengthening of the partnership between Jupiter Power and Consumers Energy in the battery storage sector will undoubtedly pave the way for more collaborative projects in the future.

The news of the Voyager Battery Storage project comes as Consumers Energy continues to invest in renewable energy sources and energy storage systems to meet the needs of its customers and support a more sustainable future. The company's focus on large-scale battery projects is a testament to its commitment to providing reliable, flexible, and sustainable energy solutions.
