Motorola confronts Apple's legal action, mirroring Apple's lawsuit against Samsung. The implications lead to a ban on Samsung selling the Galaxy Tab 10.1 in Europe. As a result, the similarity between the XOOM and iPad 2 becomes a point of contention.

Seems like Motorola's XOOM is the new target on Apple's radar, although the tech giant hasn't formally requested a ban on its sales just yet. This all stems from Apple's ongoing legal tussle with Samsung, where a ban on the Galaxy Tab 10.1 in Europe was imposed due to design similarities with the iPad. Now, it's the XOOM's turn to face Apple's ire, as its resemblance to the iPad 2 leaves Apple feeling uneasy.

It's uncertain whether Apple will pursue an injunction against the XOOM, but knowing their history of vigorously safeguarding their intellectual property, they might give it a shot if they get the chance. At the moment, Motorola can carry on selling the XOOM without any roadblocks. Remember, Apple and Motorola have a long-standing history of legal battles, with as many as 40 US patents currently being disputed between them. So far, all of Apple's patent lawsuits in the tablet arena have centered around design-related issues, with no software or technical concerns.

In more unfortunate news, a lesser-known German company, JAY-tech, has been served a preliminary injunction due to similarities in design between their 7-inch Android tablet and Apple's own offering. It seems that many tablet manufacturers find it hard to resist the allure of mimicking the iPad's design, unless they have something truly unique like the Asus Transformer or Slider tablets. In fact, China's cloning industry is notorious for producing exact replicas of popular devices. Apple could have a field day in China once they've tackled the big names.

The e-reader technology market might feel a ripple as Apple considers challenging Motorola's XOOM in court, due to its design resemblance to the iPad 2. Meanwhile, JAY-tech, a lesser-known German company, faces an injunction for design similarities between their Android tablet and Apple's offering.
