MTN Invests Over R300 Million to Bolster Gauteng's Network Infrastructure Infrastructure
In a significant move towards bridging the digital divide in South Africa, MTN has announced a R300 million investment for upgrading its network infrastructure in Gauteng. This investment forms part of MTN's broader R4.5 billion national investment plan for 2025.
Machawe Dlamini, General Manager for Gauteng Operations at MTN SA, made the announcement, stating that the enhancements to their network and increased accessibility to digital services are crucial aspects of their Ambition 2025 strategy. The goal is to ensure more people, businesses, and communities across urban and rural areas have access to reliable, high-speed digital services.
The primary investment includes the acquisition and construction of several new base stations, operational improvements, and capacity upgrades to over 70 sites. The upgrades aim to enhance the quality, resilience, and performance of the network, improving coverage and increasing network capacity.
The upgrades will introduce 5G services and improve LTE performance, helping reduce the digital divide between urban and rural areas. Furthermore, the investment will lead to improvements in battery, site security, and energy facilities, including the availability of generators across the province.
These improvements are not limited to Gauteng. MTN has also allocated an additional R480 million for network upgrades in KwaZulu-Natal, focusing on building new sites and increasing rural access to 4G and 5G services.

He further stated that the enhancements will enable more South Africans to access online educational, health, and business services capable of enriching and transforming lives.
