Munich Airport Grounded Twice in 48 Hours by Drone Sightings
Munich Airport experienced severe disruptions over two consecutive evenings due to drone sightings. On Friday, 23 incoming flights were diverted, 12 were canceled, and 46 planned takeoffs were halted. This followed a similar incident on Thursday, causing significant delays and affecting thousands of travelers.
The drones involved were reportedly of a type typically used militarily, an unusual sight in civilian airspace. Authorities are still investigating the intentions and identities of the drone pilots. On Thursday, 23 incoming flights were diverted to other airports, with 46 departures canceled, impacting around 6,500 passengers. The following day, a further 23 flights were diverted, and 12 were canceled, with 46 planned takeoffs unable to proceed.
Passengers were left stranded, with around 6,500 spending the night at the airport. They were provided with essentials such as camp beds, blankets, drinks, and snacks. Munich Airport resumed operations at 7:00 am on Saturday, but delays persisted throughout the day.
Bavarian Minister President Markus Söder has announced plans to introduce an emergency law to address drone incidents. Bavarian Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann has called for expanded powers for the Bavarian police to shoot down drones if necessary. Munich Airport was grounded twice in 48 hours, highlighting the urgent need for stricter drone regulations.
