Munich Airport Shut Down by Mystery Drones, 3,000 Passengers Affected

Munich Airport (MUC) faced a significant disruption on October 2, 2025, when multiple drones led to the temporary closure of its runways. This incident, which lasted overnight, resulted in the cancellation of 17 flights and affected nearly 3,000 passengers. The source of the drones remains unknown, and authorities are still investigating.

The incident at MUC follows a string of similar drone sightings at airports and over key infrastructure in the region. On September 22, 2025, Copenhagen Airport suspended all flights for four hours due to drone sightings. Additionally, drones flew over critical infrastructure in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, raising concerns of potential espionage. Danish Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen described the drone activity as a coordinated hybrid attack, suggesting a professional actor was involved.

Authorities are exploring a potential connection between the Munich Airport drones and a suspicious cargo ship in the area. While 15 incoming flights were redirected to other airports, 17 flights could not depart from MUC, impacting almost 3,000 passengers. Neither the police nor airport authorities have identified any responsible person or group at this time.

Munich Airport reopened by the morning of October 3, 2025, following the overnight closure. The investigation into the drone incident continues, with authorities considering potential links to other recent drone sightings in the region. The impact on passengers and flights has been significant, with nearly 3,000 people affected by the cancellation of 17 flights.
