Munich Airport Shut Down Twice in 24 Hours Due to Drone Sightings

Munich airport experienced significant disruptions on Friday evening, with around 6,500 passengers affected by flight suspensions due to suspected drone sightings. This incident follows a series of drone-related incidents across Europe in recent weeks, including the closure of Copenhagen and Oslo airports and incursions into Polish and Estonian airspace.

The recent incidents have raised concerns about drone security in Europe. In Germany, Munich airport has been forced to shut down twice in less than 24 hours due to suspected drone sightings, grounding 17 flights on Thursday evening and affecting thousands more on Friday. These incidents have caused significant travel disruption and highlighted the need for improved drone detection and defense systems.

CDU politician Norbert Röttgen has proposed the establishment of a multi-dimensional drone wall to quickly detect, track, and destroy drones. This proposal has gained support from several EU member states, including those affected by recent drone incursions. Germany's Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt will raise the matter of drone defense at a meeting of European interior ministers on Saturday, indicating the urgency of the issue.

The series of drone incidents in Europe has underscored the need for robust drone defense systems. As authorities investigate the causes and origins of these incidents, it is clear that coordinated action is required to ensure the safety and security of Europe's airspace. The proposed multi-dimensional drone wall is one potential solution, and its implementation will be a key topic of discussion among European interior ministers.
