NASA's Safety Advisers Doubt SpaceX's Starship for Artemis 3 Mission
NASA's safety advisers have cast doubt on SpaceX's Starlink being ready for the Artemis 3 mission in 2027. They raised concerns about competing priorities and potential delays in development.
The panel highlighted that the Starlink and its Human Landing System (HLS) are on aggressive schedules, with the HLS development seen as 'years late' for the 2027 lunar landing. They also noted the challenge of demonstrating cryogenic propellant transfer, which is a major hurdle in Starlink's development. Despite these concerns, the panel acknowledged SpaceX's accomplishments, particularly the rapid launch tempo of Falcon 9 driven by Starlink.
SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell echoed the concern about propellant transfer, stating it is more challenging than docking Starlinks in orbit. NASA, collaborating with SpaceX on the Starlink HLS, aims to support the Artemis 3 mission, but any delay in these programs could significantly impact the planned lunar landing.
NASA's safety advisers have warned that SpaceX's Starlink may not be ready for the Artemis 3 mission in 2027 due to competing priorities and development challenges. The future of the Artemis program beyond 2027 remains uncertain, with the HLS and lunar spacesuits development on aggressive schedules. NASA and SpaceX continue to work together to overcome these obstacles and achieve a successful lunar landing.
