Nestlé Purina Leads Pet Care Industry in Soil Health Initiative
Nestlé Purina has become the first pet care company to support the reThink Soil initiative, enabling other parts of Nestlé's food business to engage in the work. This collaboration aims to improve soil health on 50 percent of US croplands by 2025 through practices like cover crops, conservation tillage, and crop rotation.
Nestlé Purina's commitment last year helped The Nature Conservancy reduce nutrient and sediment flow in the Wabash River in Indiana through wetland and woodland installations. These practices not only benefit farmers economically but also enhance water quality, improve wildlife habitat, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and build resilience to extreme weather conditions. The initiative involves collaboration between The Nature Conservancy, Soil Health Partnership, and Soil Health Institute to achieve soil health goals through a 10-point strategic roadmap. Currently, less than 10 percent of soils in the United States are managed optimally, with increasing demand for food, fuel, and fiber placing stress on soil health.
Nestlé Purina's support for the reThink Soil initiative is a significant step towards promoting sustainable farming practices. By improving soil health, the initiative benefits both the environment and farmers economically, while also helping to meet the growing demand for food, fuel, and fiber.
