New Railways Stretch on Lot 4 Ales̱d - Hungarian Border Officially Opened, Signifying a Key Accomplishment for Egis Oversight Services
News Article: Progress Made on Cluj-Napoca to Hungarian Border Railway Line Rehabilitation
The Cluj-Napoca to Oradea to Episcopia Bihor to the Hungarian border railway line rehabilitation project, funded by the PNRR (National Recovery and Resilience Plan) funds, is making significant strides.
The first 7 km of the new railway on Lot 4, Aleșd to the Hungarian border, were commissioned on July 31, 2025, marking an important milestone in the project overseen by Egis supervision. This marks Egis' first major success on the Cluj-Napoca to Oradea to Episcopia Bihor railway line.
Additionally, the railway section between Episcopia Bihor and the Hungarian border was electrified as of July 31, 2025.
The project, which involves complete railway works over 166.42 km, divided into four lots, aims to improve economic competitiveness, connectivity, and environmental sustainability. Upon completion, passenger speeds will reach up to 160 km/h, and freight speeds will reach up to 120 km/h, while improving accessibility and safety.
Lot 4, which covers the 46.74 km section from Aleșd to the Hungarian border, includes stations like Tilegad, Oșorhei, Oradea Est, Oradea, and Episcopia Bihor. The works on Lot 4 are carried out under traffic, requiring complex organization and temporary works to maintain circulation.
Further commissioning of sections within Lot 4 is expected in the near future, although a specific completion date for the entire line has not been explicitly stated in the available sources.
The works on Lot 4 include embankments and railway superstructure in the Episcopia Bihor station and between Episcopia Bihor and the Hungarian Border, installation of catenary poles and anchors, installation of signaling cables, completion of 13 underpasses, and construction of 2 culverts.
Egis supervises and coordinates contractors' activities for Lot 3 and Lot 4 up to the final acceptance of the project. The company, a global firm in architectural, consulting, construction engineering, operations, and mobility services, is ensuring that all work meets the requirements and that every phase is executed efficiently and safely, in line with project specifications.
The reopened segment has a length of 7 kilometers, between km 0+660.74 to km 7+088.32. The rehabilitated section between Episcopia Bihor and the Hungarian Border allows the resumption of railway traffic, currently with restrictions (maximum speed 50 km/h), until the completion of the entire lot.
The project advances social equity by improving accessibility for people with disabilities and ensuring safe transit for all users. It also supports environmental sustainability by promoting efficient transport and reducing emissions.
The Cluj-Napoca to Oradea to Episcopia Bihor railway line rehabilitation project enhances Romania's economic competitiveness through sustainable transport infrastructure, EU integration, and improved connectivity to the European network.

The rehabilitation project, which includes the integration of technology, aims to modernize the Cluj-Napoca to Hungarian border railway line, enhancing its efficiency and safety.
Upon completion, the new technology on the railway line is expected to facilitate higher passenger speeds of up to 160 km/h and freight speeds of up to 120 km/h.
