Newly Renamed Pebble Smartwatch Unveiled: Original Name Resurrected

The smartwatch market is about to welcome a new contender, as Core Devices, the company behind the revitalized watch, prepares to launch the Pebble Time 2. This upcoming smartwatch promises to offer a unique blend of features, focusing on battery life, readability, and simplicity.

Pebble Time 2: A Smartwatch with Endurance

The Pebble Time 2 boasts a 1.5-inch 64-color e-paper display, known for its excellent sunlight visibility and up to 30 days of battery life—far surpassing most smartwatches in the market. This long battery life is made possible by the low-power e-paper technology, making the Pebble Time 2 an ideal choice for users needing long endurance and basic smart features.

The smartwatch features a 316 stainless steel curved body, with the smartwatch face frame and buttons also made from this durable material. The design emphasizes minimalism with thin bezels and quick-release 22mm straps, reminiscent of the 2014 Pebble Steel.

Advanced Features and Sensors

The Pebble Time 2 is equipped with a compass sensor, a second microphone for better noise cancellation, and a heart rate monitor, sleep tracker, and vibration alerts. While the operating system, PebbleOS, is an age-old system with a few modern amenities, it still has glitches to work out.

Pebble Time 2 vs. Apple Watch Series 11

In contrast, the Apple Watch Series 11, expected in 2025, focuses on advanced health and smart features, with strong integration into the iOS ecosystem. While exact specs are still emerging, the Series 11 continues Apple’s trend of improving features like blood oxygen monitoring (recently re-enabled in the US), stress tracking, and uses a powerful chipset (likely an iteration of Apple’s S8 or newer processor). However, the Series 11 offers a bright OLED display with always-on capability but significantly shorter battery life, around 1 to 2 days, depending on usage.

Preorders and Availability

Core Devices is still in the process of engineering testing through design and production for the Pebble Time 2, with no official word on a release date. However, preorder customers will be emailed to finalize their color selection, and a survey will be available for those who want to swap their preorder from a $150 Pebble 2 Duo to a $225 Pebble Time 2.

The images of the Pebble Time 2 imply we're getting closer to an actual launch. The cheaper, polycarbonate Pebble Time 2 variant will have a 1.2-inch black and white non-touch e-paper display, a barometer, and a compass, but lack a heart rate monitor.

The Pebble Time 2 is shaping up to be a more exciting wearable than the upcoming Apple Watch Series 11, appealing to those who prefer simpler, less data-obsessed wearables. Eric Migicovsky, the original Pebble designer, has been regularly blogging his efforts in China to get the first Pebble units manufactured through his X account.
