Nintendo's latest Mario Kart World update exacerbates existing issues.

In the world of Nintendo, I've been mainly spinning my wheels on two bold adventures – The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker and Mario Kart World, post the launch of the Switch 2. However, the latter's emphasis on interconnected tracks over classic three-lap races has left me yearning for a change. Though I found ways to spice up the game with Local VS Mode and online voting, the recent Ver 1.1.2 update seems to be turning things around, but not in the direction I was hoping for.

Mario Kart World's intermission races, with their 24-player chaos and exhilarating Knockout Tour, have been a blast. But after repeatedly racing between circuits, the charm begins to wear off. Grand Prix follows suit with a circuit-racing format every time, and most online tracks follow a similar pattern – a race to a track, followed by a brief lap on the course itself. It starts to feel repetitive, especially when many of these connected tracks resemble straight lines.

It's no secret that a considerable portion of the Mario Kart World community, especially at higher levels, has been voting for "Random" tracks to get some much-needed 3-lap action. I thought Nintendo had noticed our collective frustration and would address the issue, but instead, they've taken an unexpected turn.

The updated selection process now includes the three tracks up for grabs in the "Random" selection, only offering a truly random track about a fourth of the time. This makes it harder to vote for tracks outside the three presented options, which are almost always intermission tracks. It's fine to have the option for these tracks, but I long for the charm of genuine 3-lap races on unique circuits.

On these long, stringy tracks, the new features like wall riding and rail grinding feel underutilized. When I'm solely focused on reaching the next checkpoint, I seldom have the chance to show off my skills with skilful moves. The tracks' excessive width also means little of the thrilling drifting mechanics that truly shine in proper 3-lap races.

However, I'm not crying foul and advocating for the abolition of interconnected tracks. They work brilliantly in Free Roam and Knockout Tour modes. But when it comes to grinding for a top spot in online play, nothing beats a classic 3-lap race where you can develop your strategies and hone your skills.

It's puzzling why Nintendo seems to be working against this desire for traditional 3-lap races as the online community clamors for them. If they keep on tweaking the system to favor intermission races, they risk pushing players away from open online play altogether and potentially forcing them back to Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. While I appreciate their efforts to keep the game fresh and exciting, I simply want a chance to enjoy my favorite kind of race – the classic 3-lap circuit.

  1. I've been exploring different gaming experiences on my Nintendo Switch 2, particularly The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker and Mario Kart World.
  2. Despite the excitement of Mario Kart World's intermission races and Knockout Tour, the repetition of circuits can become monotonous.
  3. The recent Ver 1.1.2 update in Mario Kart World has introduced a new selection process that limites the choice of "Random" tracks and favors intermission tracks.
  4. I still enjoy the interconnected tracks in Free Roam and Knockout Tour modes, but I yearn for the traditional 3-lap races on unique circuits in online play.
  5. With the new features like wall riding and rail grinding, the long, stringy tracks don't allow for adequate showcasing of my racing skills.
  6. I advocate for a balance in the designing of Mario Kart World tracks, where interconnected tracks coexist with classic 3-lap circuits to cater to different players' preferences.
