NordSpace's Historic Canadian Rocket Launch Delayed, But Not Derailed

Toronto-based startup NordSpace made history in late September 2025 with its first commercial space launch from Canadian soil. The attempt, however, faced several challenges, highlighting both the country's growing role in sovereign space access and the complexities of rocketry.

NordSpace, in collaboration with the Shanghai Academy of Spaceflight Technology, aimed to launch its sub-orbital test vehicle, Taiga, from the Atlantic Spaceport Complex (ASX) in St. Lawrence, Newfoundland and Labrador. Taiga, powered by in-house 3D-printed Hadfield engines, uses kerosene and liquid oxygen as propellant.

The launch attempt encountered several hurdles. A fishing vessel entered the exclusion zone, causing a delay. Additionally, pad anomalies and discrepancies in propellant quality between test sites led to a full postponement on September 25. Despite these setbacks, NordSpace plans to return to the pad soon, with a new launch date expected in the coming weeks.

NordSpace's ambitious goal is to build an end-to-end space ecosystem entirely within Canada. This includes developing orbital-class launch vehicles, spaceports, and satellites. The company is advancing its orbital program, focusing on responsive and reusable launches. The Taiga rocket serves as a stepping stone to more advanced systems.

NordSpace's first commercial space launch from Canada, though delayed, underscores the country's growing involvement in space exploration. The challenges faced also highlight the intricacies and complexities of rocketry. With plans to return to the launchpad soon, NordSpace continues its mission to establish a comprehensive space ecosystem within Canada.
