Notch Hints at Developing "Minecraft 2" while Expressing Interest in Creating a Roguelike Game.

Minecraft creator Markus 'Notch' Persson appears to be planning to delve into the development of Minecraft 2, as suggested in a series of posts on social media.

Notch, known for his prolific social media activity, particularly on his X account, recently initiated a poll to gauge fan interest between a traditional roguelike game blended with a tile-based first-person dungeon crawler he's been working on, and the long-awaited sequel to Minecraft. Predictably, a whopping 77% of votes favored the development of Minecraft 2.

In a subsequent post, Notch confirmed his seriousness about the poll, hinting at his intentions to proceed with whatever poll winner emerges. He clarified in the comments that he had effectively greenlit the start of Minecraft 2 development.

As of now, there's no concrete information about the specifics of Minecraft 2 or how it differs from its predecessor. Seeing that Notch no longer owns the Minecraft IP following its acquisition by Microsoft decades ago, the sequel won't carry the original name and will more likely embody the spirit of the original rather than a direct continuation.

In a frenzy of social media engagement, Notch has been interacting with fans, sharing his enthusiasm for the prospect of returning to game development and teasing a potential new project, most likely Minecraft 2. He revealed that he is indifferent towards the sequence of project development, acknowledging that the option with greater financial potential might be his eventual choice, even if it lacks in quality.

Notch also clarified that, should he proceed with the development of Minecraft 2, he will be mindful not to encroach upon Mojang's work on the original game, expressing due credit for the studio he used to be a part of.

He also blinked an ominous warning to fans that there's a likelihood of Minecraft 2, or any future project, never seeing the light of day. With his wealth potentially surpassing reasonable requirements following the sale of the original game, the financial impetus for another title seems less compelling. But, as long as he maintains his enjoyment of the development process, a potential sequel remains a plausible possibility.

Pondering how one could develop a spiritual successor to Minecraft without tampering with the original IP is a mystery I can't unlock. However, if anyone can reinvent the concept, it's none other than the game's original creator, Notch. Still, it might take some time before we get a glimpse into the world of Minecraft 2, if the project even proceeds past the development phase. Contrasting with the swift creation of the original Minecraft, the current attention on Notch might extend the wait time significantly.

And not to forget, Notch has finally bid adieu to the infamous skibidi toilet meme, even though its origin and meaning continue to elude him.

Notch's poll on social media revealed a strong preference for the development of Minecraft 2, with 77% of votes favoring it. Despite no longer owning the Minecraft IP, Notch hinted at greenlighting the start of Minecraft 2's development, mentioning that the sequel would likely embody the spirit of the original rather than a direct continuation.
