Omnivision Unveils 50MP OV50R Sensor for High-End Smartphones and Action Cameras
Omnivision has launched the OV50R, a 50-megapixel CMOS sensor designed for smartphones and action cameras. This new sensor promises to make high-end imaging more available, consuming 20% less power than its predecessor.
The OV50R boasts impressive features, including the ability to handle extreme contrast environments, maintaining detail in both highlights and shadows. It offers more than 18 stops of dynamic range, rivalling professional digital cinema cameras.
Powered by Omnivision's second-generation TheiaCel technology, the OV50R enables single-exposure HDR with an astonishing 110 dB. It also supports 8K video with dual analog gain HDR and 4K at 60 fps with three-channel HDR. Furthermore, it offers 12.5MP at up to 120 fps through 4-cell binning and quad phase detection autofocus with 100% coverage.
While specific companies using the OV50R are not publicly disclosed, Omnivision aims to make this high-end imaging technology more available in handheld camera products.
The OV50R's real-world performance and practical deployment in devices remain to be seen, as it competes with offerings from Sony and Samsung. However, with its promising features and power efficiency, it could potentially shake up the market for high-end smartphone and action camera imaging.
