Persisting Challenges for Tesla in Europe as Sales Dip in Germany and Britain During May
Tesla, the American electric vehicle (EV) giant, is experiencing a significant sales slump in Europe, particularly in Germany and the UK, according to recent data.
In May 2025, Tesla's sales in Germany dropped by an staggering 77% compared to the same month the previous year, with only 1,210 vehicles registered. This represents a year-to-date decline of 75% in Tesla's German sales. Similarly, in the UK, Tesla's May 2025 sales dropped by over 45% year-over-year, with only 1,758 Tesla vehicles sold. In comparison, in May 2024, Tesla sold 3,244 vehicles in the United Kingdom.
These declines have led to a significant drop in Tesla's market share. In Germany, Tesla's share of the broader passenger vehicle market fell to 0.51% in May 2025. In the UK, Tesla's market share of BEV sales has fallen behind rivals like Volkswagen, BMW, Audi, Skoda, and Chinese automaker BYD, who posted strong gains and doubled its UK sales to 1,388 units last month. Despite the decline, Tesla remains the best-selling EV brand in the UK year-to-date.
The reasons behind Tesla's slump are multifaceted. Germany's mid-Q1 2025 cut of e-mobility subsidies to fund other social priorities and persistent concerns about charging infrastructure availability are contributing factors. Additionally, the European EV market, while growing overall, is becoming increasingly competitive. Chinese EV manufacturers are rapidly gaining ground in Europe, with Chinese EV maker BYD's registrations soaring ninefold to 1,857 units in May, surpassing Tesla's total.
CEO Elon Musk's controversial political statements have also drawn criticism in many parts of Europe and may be influencing consumer sentiment.
The Tesla factory in Germany, Giga Berlin, is designed for 500,000 vehicles annually and planned for expansion to 1 million cars per year. However, at the current pace, Tesla may struggle to produce and sell even a quarter of the plant's capacity in 2025.
Preliminary data from New AutoMotive was used to determine the UK sales figures. The overall BEV market in Germany saw a nearly 45% year-over-year increase in May 2025, with 43,060 units registered. This growth occurred despite a 40.5% drop in Tesla's new-car registrations for six consecutive months through June 2025, with a 39.5% fall in June alone. This downturn indicates Tesla is losing ground to competitors as the European EV market continues to expand.

- Despite the market-wide growth, technology advancements in electric vehicles (EVs) have not been enough to compensate for the sales drop experienced by Tesla in Europe, as indicated by the data from New AutoMotive.
- In contrast to the stirring growth in sports like EV sales across Europe, Tesla's sports performance in the market, as presented by European EV market data, is showing a significant slump.
