China Leads Global Renewable Energy Growth

China's new energy sector has experienced remarkable growth in recent years, with the country becoming a world leader in renewable energy capacity. According to the National Energy Administration, wind and solar capacity are expected to maintain the lead over thermal power, with China's annual new installations accounting for more than 40% of the global total.

In the first half of 2025, China installed an impressive 256 GW of solar capacity, surpassing the combined solar capacity of the rest of the world. This significant expansion has brought China's total installed renewable power capacity to approximately 1.41 billion kilowatts by the end of 2024, accounting for over 40% of the country's total electricity capacity.

This rapid growth in renewable energy has been ongoing since 2013, with solar power capacity increasing more than 180 times and wind power capacity growing sixfold. By the end of March 2025, China's installed capacity of wind and photovoltaic power reached 1.482 billion kilowatts, surpassing thermal power capacity for the first time in history.

China's renewable energy sector has significantly contributed to worldwide green development. In the first quarter of 2025, electricity generated from wind and photovoltaics in China reached 536.4 billion kilowatt-hours. This electricity generation accounted for 22.5% of China's total power use, a rise of 4.3 percentage points compared to the same period last year.

Congress leader Shashi Tharoor lauded China's rapid progress in renewable energy, noting that India, with its vast solar potential, could learn from Beijing's aggressive push into renewables. Tharoor's remarks came as he posted on X about China's solar capacity installation, urging large-scale adoption of solar power in India and suggesting covering barren lands from the Thar desert to the Deccan Plateau with solar power for clean energy.

The Chinese government has actively promoted renewable energy development by focusing on significantly increasing installed photovoltaic and wind power capacities. This includes aiming to expand each by 10 million kilowatts within five years, as part of international cooperation efforts like the SCO summit in Tianjin. China also fosters training, infrastructure, green industry, and technological innovation in renewable energies, contributing substantially to global renewable energy progress.
