Mobile Phone Sales in Pakistan Decline by 12% in FY 2024-25

Mobile phone sales in Pakistan have seen a significant drop, with a decline of approximately 12-13% in the financial year (FY) 2024-25 compared to FY 2023-24. The total number of mobile phones sold in FY 2024-25 was around 30 million units, a decrease from the 34 million units sold in the previous year[1][2][3][4].

The decline in sales can be attributed to several factors. One of the main reasons is the high base effect. FY 2023-24 saw exceptional sales due to tax amendments on handsets and pent-up demand, setting a very high benchmark that makes the current year's numbers appear lower in comparison[1][2][3].

Another factor contributing to the decline is the extended mobile replacement cycle. Consumers are holding onto their phones for longer periods, partly due to a lack of attractive or innovative new model launches in the market[1][2][3].

Economic challenges and reduced purchasing power, particularly in rural areas, have also slowed demand for new mobile phones, affecting overall sales[1]. Moreover, the decline in imported phone sales has also contributed to the overall drop[2][3].

Despite the slowdown, local assembly remains dominant, meeting about 94% of Pakistan's mobile phone demand between January and May 2025[2]. Industry leaders emphasize the importance of expanding local manufacturing to support technology transfer, job creation, and economic sustainability[2].

The top 10 locally assembled mobile phone brands during the first half of 2025 include VGO Tel, Infinix, Itel, Vivo, Xiaomi, Samsung, Tecno, G'Five, Nokia, and Q Mobile[5].

Khushnood Aftab, the Convenor at FPCCI on IT and Allied Sector, praised the contribution of local mobile phone assemblers for their role in technology transfer, job creation, and foreign exchange savings[6]. Aftab also emphasized the importance of enhancing the local assembly of mobile phones, laptops, computers, and other devices for technological progress in the country[7].

Ibrahim Amin, a financial analyst, suggested enhancing literacy on finance and technology to bring reforms in areas such as education, health governance, digitisation, and cashless economy[8].

In the period from July to October 2025, mobile phone imports in Pakistan showed a negative year-over-year growth[9]. Despite this, the focus remains on strengthening local manufacturing and assembly to meet the country's growing demand for technology while fostering economic growth and sustainability.

The decline in mobile phone sales in Pakistan has raised concerns within the finance sector, as it may indicates a potential slowdown in business growth. Financial analysts, such as Ibrahim Amin, suggest enhancing literacy on finance and technology to improve economic conditions, which could boost areas like education, health governance, digitization, and cashless economy [8].

To support technology transfer, job creation, and economic sustainability, industry leaders stress the importance of expanding local mobile phone manufacturing [2]. This strategy, in turn, might help to increase the index of technology advancement and overall growth in Pakistan's economy [3].

Moreover, the focus on strengthening local manufacturing and assembly is expected to continue, as it is crucial to meet the country's growing demand for technology while fostering sustainable growth and economic development [9]. Analyzing sales trends and local manufacturing patterns can offer insights for investors interested in the finance of technology and business sectors in Pakistan.
