Reducing Carbon Footprint and Plastic Consumption in LG's Air Conditioner Production Processes
LG Electronics is taking significant strides in its sustainability agenda, as the tech giant unveils a new manufacturing process for its commercial 4-way system air conditioners. This eco-conscious approach, in line with LG's "Better Life for All" Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) vision and "Future Vision 2030" sustainable investments, is set to reduce annual plastic use by 270 tons and carbon emissions by over 4,400 tons.
Bae Cheung-hyun, the head of the System Air Conditioners Business at LG ES Company, has stated that the new manufacturing process underscores LG's dedication to sustainability. The process involves the replacement of Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS) with Polypropylene (PP), a shift that carries a lower carbon footprint.
The new manufacturing process employs foaming injection molding, a method that reduces plastic use by 900g per unit. This technique, originally developed by Bosch in 2016 for the production of automotive air conditioning units, is now being applied in LG's production line.
TÜV Rheinland, a global leader in independent inspection services, has confirmed that the updated process reduces per-unit emissions to 14.85 kg CO2e. This reduction is equivalent to the carbon absorbed by a 30-year-old pine forest spanning 580 soccer fields annually.
LG Electronics' strategies for achieving its climate goals include using renewable energy, installing high-efficiency equipment, and leveraging proprietary Core Tech such as inverter motor technology to reduce energy waste. The tech giant aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 54.6% by 2030 compared to 2017 levels.
As part of its commitment to sustainability, LG Electronics is expanding the use of its eco-conscious manufacturing process to 4-way system models and plans to roll it out across other residential and commercial air conditioners. The company intends to continue developing eco-conscious air conditioners using innovative technologies for a healthier planet.
In conclusion, LG Electronics' advancements in sustainable manufacturing demonstrate its dedication to a greener future. The company's eco-focused innovations and investments, as outlined in its "Future Vision 2030", are a testament to its commitment to creating a better life for all.
