Remarkable Upgrade in Grand Seiko's Spring Drive: Redefining Precision in Timekeeping (Addressing the Issue with Their Bracelet Previously)
Grand Seiko has announced the release of its latest innovation, the Spring Drive Caliber 9RB2, a mechanical movement that boasts an accuracy rating of ±20 seconds per year. This remarkable precision outperforms a standard COSC-certified chronometer, which has an accuracy rating of -4/+6 seconds per day.
The new movement is available in two distinct models: the limited edition SLGB001, crafted in 950 platinum, and an unspecified other model in the Evolution 9 case design. The SLGB003, made from High-Intensity Titanium, is the smallest Evolution 9 watch and the smallest Grand Seiko model to use a 9R-series movement, measuring 37mm in diameter with a thickness of 11.4mm.
Key Technological Advancements
The 9RB2 achieves its impressive accuracy through several key technological advancements. The quartz oscillator, aged for three months, ensures stability and accuracy over time. A custom-made thermocompensated integrated circuit helps counteract temperature variations that can affect the movement's accuracy.
The caliber also features an adjustment system that allows for precise regulation of the movement's accuracy. This system ensures that the watch can be finely tuned to minimize deviations in timekeeping. Grand Seiko's Spring Drive technology, which combines the smooth sweeping hand motion of a mechanical watch with the precision of a quartz watch, also contributes to the high accuracy of the movement.
Notable Features
The SLGB003 model, priced at $10,900, features a silver-tinged blue dial with an ice forest texture and a tempered blue seconds hand. Its crystal is a box-shaped sapphire with an anti-reflective coating on the inner surface. The watch debuts a brand new bracelet clasp with a three-step toolless micro-adjustment system, allowing for on-the-fly adjustments in 2mm increments.
The SLGB001 model, a limited edition of 80 pieces, is paired with a blue crocodile strap and is available exclusively through Grand Seiko boutiques for $39,000. The SLGB003 has a water resistance of 100 meters (10 bar).
The new U.F.A. movement improves on Grand Seiko's previous Spring Drive movements, which had an accuracy of ±15 seconds per month. The U.F.A. designation harks back to the brand's V.F.A. (Very Fine Adjusted) watches from 1969 to 1975.
The SLGB003 will be available at Grand Seiko Boutiques and selected Grand Seiko Salons starting in June 2025. With its exceptional accuracy, distinctive design, and advanced technology, the Spring Drive Caliber 9RB2 is set to redefine the standards in watchmaking.
