Retail and corporate bank account APIs to be introduced through collaboration between MPS and Salt Edge.

In a significant move towards enhancing financial services across Europe, Mobile Payment Solutions (MPS) and Salt Edge have joined forces to launch PSD2-compliant open banking APIs. The collaboration, currently in its early stages, aims to create a secure, compliant, and open banking ecosystem.

Based in Belgium, MPS is a regulated payment institution that powers secure, real-time fund movement in B2B, B2C, and embedded finance contexts. Salt Edge, a leading open banking provider, brings its expertise in compliance and open banking infrastructure to the table.

The partnership between MPS and Salt Edge is focused on delivering smarter, data-enriched financial services. Initially, the APIs will be available in the Netherlands and France for both retail and corporate accounts. The long-term goal, however, is to make these APIs accessible throughout the entire European Economic Area (EEA) to all licensed third-party providers (TPPs).

Victor Colta, product owner at Salt Edge, views compliance as a driver of innovation. He believes the partnership establishes a basis for robust and dependable APIs that third-party providers can have confidence in. Jan Harboort, CEO of Mobile Payment Solutions, shares this sentiment, seeing the partnership as a key enabler of smarter, more responsive payment experiences.

The APIs developed through this collaboration will enable Account Information Service Providers (AISPs) to retrieve account balances and transaction data, Payment Initiation Service Providers (PISPs) to initiate payments directly from user accounts, and Payment Initiation and Account Information Service Providers (PIISPs) to confirm the availability of funds before authorising transactions.

One of the key aims of this collaboration is to support MPS in obtaining exemption from the fallback mechanism under PSD2 regulation (Article 33.6 of the RTS), thanks to Salt Edge’s robust compliance capabilities. This ensures uninterrupted and reliable data access, facilitating innovation in payments and financial management through seamless, PSD2-compliant APIs.

The platform being built with Salt Edge's Open Banking infrastructure anticipates user needs and delivers actionable insight in real time. MPS's payment infrastructure, combined with Salt Edge's extensive connectivity across European banks and compliance expertise, aims to better serve a diverse client base, including fintechs, e-commerce platforms, mobility, and hospitality brands.

This partnership represents a significant step forward in delivering smarter, data-enriched financial services with a full-scale European activation on the horizon. The collaboration lays the groundwork for scalable, next-gen financial services, enhancing financial experiences across Europe.
