"Rewe is ending the practice of customers collecting items - here's the new process"
Rewe, a leading European supermarket chain, has launched a new loyalty program that integrates both payment and rewards into one easy-to-use app. The new system, now live in stores, aims to streamline the shopping experience for its customers.
The Rewe app, a crucial component of the new system, allows customers to make payments via SEPA direct debit and collect digital points for their purchases. At checkout, whether attended or self-service, customers simply scan a QR code on their smartphone from the Rewe app, which facilitates both payment and the assignment of the purchase to their Rewe Bonus loyalty account.
Purchases made through the app automatically credit the customer’s Rewe Bonus account with bonus credit in euros. This replaces the previous Payback system and rewards purchases individually with bonus credit, which accumulates as euros in the app. The bonus credit functions like money that customers can redeem according to their preference to save on future purchases.
The new Rewe Bonus program offers a range of additional features within the app, including digital receipts (eBon), online ordering with home delivery or collection, personalized offers, shopping lists, and recipe ideas.
Customers earn one digital point for every 5 euros spent, which are collected in the Rewe app. The points can be redeemed within the respective promotional period, and after the promotional period, loyalty points expire and cannot be transferred to other promotions.
However, details on the expiration policy of the Rewe Bonus credits were not provided in available sources. It's also worth noting that not all markets may participate in the digital loyalty program, and it's not possible with the Rewe delivery service.
In summary, the program uses the Rewe app to scan a QR code at checkout that simultaneously processes payment and credits loyalty bonuses in euros, which can then be redeemed flexibly. The digital loyalty points can be collected and redeemed in all participating Rewe and Nahkauf markets.
Rewe left Payback in December 2024 and is now focusing on its own app for its loyalty program. A current promotion with kitchen knives is running until November 1, 2025. Simultaneous redemption and missing points are not possible in the checkout process. In rare cases, it may take up to three days for points to be credited.
The digital loyalty points system marks a significant shift for Rewe, replacing classic stickers with a more modern, streamlined approach. The new system is expected to enhance the shopping experience for Rewe customers, offering a more seamless and rewarding journey.
