Rivian Adopts Google Maps as its Navigation Solution
Rivian, the pioneering electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer, has announced a major upgrade to its navigation system, now powered by Google Maps. This innovative collaboration aims to provide drivers with a more seamless and efficient driving experience, while solving a long-standing EV problem: ensuring that navigation systems can reliably plan routes that include compatible charging infrastructure, with confidence-inspiring range estimates along the way.
Beginning on July 15, 2025, the Rivian Navigation system with Google Maps began rolling out to all Rivian R1T and R1S vehicles, including both Gen 1 and Gen 2, and is also being made available on the Rivian mobile app.
The new system offers a range of features tailored to electric vehicles, such as range-on-arrival estimates, charging stop planning, and the proprietary Charging Scores system. It also includes real-time traffic updates, satellite imagery, and detailed place information, all integrated into Rivian's design to reflect its outdoors-oriented brand.
The updated place information includes operating hours, ratings, and photos, all sourced from Google Maps. Users can plan routes, check charging locations, share destinations, and view updated place information on the mobile app.
The system is built using the Google Maps Auto SDK, allowing Rivian to create a custom navigation interface that integrates seamlessly with their vehicles. Despite being built on top of Android Automotive OS (another Google product), Rivian's interface is tailored to their specific EV needs and design language, providing a unique user experience.
In contrast, Android Automotive is a broader operating system designed for vehicles, providing a base for integrating various apps and services, including Google Maps through Android Auto. While it offers flexibility and compatibility with multiple apps, it retains a more generic Android interface and functionality.
Rivian's implementation keeps full control in-house, allowing for a more customized solution that caters to the needs of electric vehicle drivers. This collaboration between Rivian and Google Maps is a growing trend among automakers seeking software solutions while maintaining their own design language and user experience.
The new system is expected to reach all Rivian vehicles over the coming days, marking a significant step forward in the company's mission to provide an exceptional driving experience for electric vehicle owners. With improved routing, more accurate estimated arrival times, and detailed satellite imagery, Rivian drivers can now navigate their journeys with greater confidence and convenience.
Starting from July 15, 2025, smartphone users can plan charging stops for their electric gadgets, such as smartphones and gadgets, using the Rivian Navigation system powered by Google Maps, available on the Rivian mobile app. This technology-driven upgrade offers a Charging Scores system for efficient charging, making it easier for Rivian drivers to navigate their journeys with greater confidence.
