Ruhr Region Set to Become Europe's Hydrogen Hub
The Ruhr region is poised to become Europe's leading hydrogen hub, thanks to the Hydrogen Metropole Ruhr (HyMR) initiative. Launched in 2021 by Business Metropole Ruhr GmbH, HyMR offers companies concrete support for entering the hydrogen economy, including networking, funding assistance, and a platform for showcasing innovative technologies.
The Ruhr region's strategic location and enormous industrial demand make it ideal for the hydrogen ramp-up. Over five million inhabitants and existing infrastructure, such as the planned GET H2 pipeline, further bolster its potential. Transmission network operators like Thyssengas and Open Grid Europe are converting natural gas networks to hydrogen, facilitating the transition.
Thyssenkrupp Steel is at the forefront of this transformation, building a hydrogen-capable direct reduction plant in Duisburg. This plant aims to produce climate-neutral steel, demonstrating the region's commitment to sustainability. HyMR, with its direct connections to all 53 cities and communities, is networking hydrogen actors, accompanying projects, and showcasing solutions to drive this change.
The Ruhr region's transformation into the future hydrogen hub of Europe is well underway, with HyMR playing a pivotal role. By leveraging its ideal conditions, strategic location, and robust infrastructure, the region is set to become the leading hydrogen region in Europe, driving the hydrogen economy forward.
