Samsung Affirms Release of its Tri-Fold Smartphone This Year, Despite Missing Unpacked Event
Samsung's upcoming tri-fold smartphone, the Galaxy G Fold, is in the final stages of development and is set to revolutionise the foldable device market. The device, with its unique triple-folding design and around a 10-inch screen, aims to blur the line between smartphone and tablet.
The design of the Galaxy G Fold is finalised and production-ready, as confirmed by Roh Tae-moon, Samsung's acting head of its device experience division. The device boasts premium specs, including the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 Elite chip, a titanium and aluminium frame for durability, 16GB of RAM, and a high-resolution 200MP camera.
Samsung has been focusing on software optimisation to ensure the device's usability and market readiness. The initial price point is expected to be around $2,900 to $3,000, positioning it as a premium product geared towards tech enthusiasts.
The launch window for the Galaxy G Fold is anticipated for Q4 2024, with some reports suggesting an October release. Initial releases are expected to happen first in markets like South Korea and China before a broader availability.
The Galaxy G Fold is Samsung's bold step into triple-folding phones, directly competing with Huawei's Mate XT and anticipated future foldables from competitors like Apple. The device retains elements from previous Samsung foldables, such as hinge mechanics and a punch-hole camera design.
Charging speed might be more moderate compared to other flagship devices, but the overall package emphasises innovation in folding tech combined with premium build and AI integration. Samsung has been rolling out AI-powered features intertwined with its Galaxy AI platform.
The name of the tri-fold phone could potentially change before its release, as the final decision is yet to be made. The name 'G Fold' was previously used, but there are reports suggesting that Tecno's Phantom Ultimate G Fold might influence Samsung's decision.
Roh Tae-moon confirmed that the tri-fold phone should launch before the end of 2025. The design of the phone, when unfolded, features a display of 9.96-inches. The device has already been spotted in a beta version of One UI 8.0, revealing several designs of a phone that folds in on itself, with both sides folding into the center.
While Samsung might have unveiled a trio of foldables during Unpacked earlier this month, the first tri-fold device was not mentioned. However, Samsung plans to launch a tri-fold phone later this year, and it could potentially be announced during the holiday season.
The new Samsung tri-fold phone is expected to be expensive when it is finally released, positioning it as a premium product for tech enthusiasts. The exact release date has not been confirmed yet, but it seems we won't have too long a wait to find out.
The Galaxy G Fold, Samsung's tri-fold smartphone, is poised to make its debut in Q4 2024, showcasing a unique blend of technology, smartphones, and gadgets with its triple-folding design and high-resolution camera. With its anticipated high price point and premium specifications, this device is aimed at tech enthusiasts who appreciate cutting-edge foldable technology.
