Semi-autonomous Vehicle Emotional Recognition System Framework
In a groundbreaking development, scientists have created an algorithm that uses EEG data to identify the emotional state of a subject with remarkable accuracy. This breakthrough, which could revolutionise the way machines understand and respond to human emotions, has significant implications for the field of autonomous vehicles.
The algorithm, developed to identify emotions from data collected in elicited emotion experiments, uses the power spectral density of the frequency cerebral bands (alpha, beta, theta, and gamma) as features for classifier training. With this data, it can recognise nine different emotions: Neutral, Anger, Disgust, Fear, Joy, Sadness, Surprise, Amusement, and Anxiety.

These architectures mimic spiking neurons, offering potential for real-time, low-latency EEG analysis suited for dynamic environments like autonomous vehicle cabins.
Broader methodological frameworks for EEG analysis using machine learning are consolidating best practices, including data acquisition, artifact removal, feature extraction (e.g., power spectrum, entropy), and classification. These frameworks help enhance attention and emotion detection reliability in real-world scenarios relevant to user experience evaluation in autonomous driving.
The potential for machines to replace certain tasks, such as the ability to feel emotions, is increasingly being questioned by scientists.
