Snapchat Introduces Paid Service for Extra Storage
Snapchat, the popular social media platform for sharing disappearing photos and videos, is set to introduce a paid service. Users will soon have to pay for extra space storage beyond a free limit of five gigabytes.
Snapchat+ is the new service, offering users the option to upgrade for more public storage. For $1.99 per month, users can get 100 gigabytes, while $3.99 per month provides 250 gigabytes. Additionally, Snapchat Platinum offers a substantial five terabytes for $15.99 per month. Drew Benvie, CEO of social media consultancy Battenhall, predicts that all social media platforms will eventually charge for storage.
The change is part of a global rollout, with pricing in the UK not yet disclosed. In Germany, for instance, 100 gigabytes of Snapchat+ storage will cost approximately 2.99 US dollars per month. Snapchat is aware that switching from a free to a paid service may not be easy, but hopes improvements to the 'memories' feature, which allows users to save and share snaps later, will be worth the cost. Users will also have a temporary storage space for 12 months, even if the free five gigabytes are exceeded.
Snapchat's new paid service, Snapchat+, will offer users more storage for a monthly fee. The change is part of a global rollout, with pricing varying by region. While the switch to a paid service may be challenging, Snapchat hopes users will appreciate the improvements to the memories feature.
