South Africa's 5-Year Plan: Digitizing Immigration Services with ETA System by 2029
South Africa is set to transform its immigration services with a 5-year plan, 'Home Affairs @ Home'. The National Unity Government aims to digitize key civil, security, and immigration services, with a focus on introducing an electronic travel authorization (ETA) system by 2029.
The ETA system will replace traditional paper visas, providing travelers with a unique digital code linked to their passport data. Upon arrival, visitors will scan their ETA code and provide biometric information for cross-verification. This system will alert immigration officials in real-time if a traveler overstays their authorization.
Currently, South Africa's e-Visa system, launched in 2019, is available for 34 countries. The new ETA system is expected to expand this, likely requiring visa-exempt visitors to obtain an ETA, similar to other countries. The goal is to make routine services accessible online, reducing the need for physical visits to Home Affairs offices.
The 'Home Affairs @ Home' plan aims to modernize interior services, with the ETA system as a key component. By 2029, South Africa hopes to offer a seamless, secure, and efficient immigration experience, leveraging advanced biometric tools and automated systems.
