South Korea & OpenAI to Build Two New AI Data Centers
President Lee Jae Myung and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman have agreed to establish two new data centers in South Korea. This move aims to cater to the increasing demand for AI infrastructure and is part of the Lee administration's plan to create an 'AI expressway' nationwide.
The data centers will be located in Pohang, North Gyeongsang Province, and South Jeolla Province, respectively. They will be built in collaboration with Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, each with a capacity of 20 megawatts.
The agreement between the South Korean government and OpenAI also outlines plans to use AI for balanced growth outside Seoul, expand public sector adoption, and foster AI startups. This is in line with OpenAI's commitment to support South Korea's AI transformation and help foster its AI ecosystem.
Separately, Google is in early talks with South Korea over AI infrastructure, following a partnership between Amazon Web Services and SK.
The two new data centers, a joint effort between Samsung Electronics, SK Hynix, and OpenAI, will significantly boost South Korea's AI capabilities. They are expected to drive balanced growth, public sector adoption, and AI startup development, as per the agreement between the Lee administration and OpenAI.
