SpaceX's Crew-11 Mission: International Team Arrives at the International Space Station

After a journey of approximately 15 hours, SpaceX's Crew Dragon Endeavour successfully docked high above the South Pacific, marking the arrival of astronauts Zena Cardman (NASA), Mike Fincke (NASA), Kimiya Yui (Japan), and Oleg Platonov (Russia) to the International Space Station (ISS) on August 1, 2025 [1][3][4].

The crew, originally assigned to different missions but reassigned due to operational decisions and medical board assessments, were able to maintain their spaceflight schedules despite changes and restrictions affecting the originally planned missions [2][3].

Zena Cardman, who was originally slated to command the Crew-9 mission, was reassigned to Crew-11 following NASA's decision to undock the Boeing Starliner spacecraft for Crew Flight Test without crew [2]. Mike Fincke and Kimiya Yui, who had been training for the next Starliner mission, switched to SpaceX due to Starliner's grounding until 2026 [3]. Oleg Platonov, who was previously bumped from a Soyuz launch lineup due to an undisclosed illness, was also reassigned to Crew-11 [3].

The ISS population temporarily increased to 11 with the arrival of the new crew, as they replace colleagues who have been at the space station since March [5]. The crew will spend at least six months at the ISS, contributing to ongoing research and experiments [5].

Interestingly, the astronauts were treated to their first view of the ISS during their journey [6]. U.S. standards consider this taxi flight to the space station as speedy, with SpaceX's Crew-11 mission taking just 15 hours [6]. However, the record for the fastest trip to the space station remains with the Russians, who achieved it in three hours [7].

Meanwhile, away from the cosmos, news from Earth includes the potential challenges faced by individual buyers of health insurance, the Corporation for Public Broadcasting's impending shutdown following defunding by Congress and targeting by former President Trump, and a shift in preferences among Seattle-area condo buyers towards apartment-like living for their purchases [8].
