Spotify Intends to Incorporate Audiobooks into its Overcrowded Application

Spotify, the Music Giant, Dives into Audiobooks

Get ready to have Spotify flooded with more than just tunes! In a bold move, the popular streaming platform has announced its acquisition of audiobook company Findaway, planning to launch audiobooks on their platform next year. But it's not just about distribution; Spotify may also delve into audiobook creation services, mirroring its podcast platform, Anchor.

Nir Zicherman, Spotify's head of audiobooks, explains that this acquisition will speed up the addition of an audiobook catalog to the platform, allowing users to access all their audio content in one place. Intriguingly, they'll pair authors with potential narrators, aiming to create their version of Audible.

Free and paid users will have the option to purchase individual audiobooks, while authors and publishers can use another payment processing platform, keeping the sales. However, those opting for Spotify's platform will need to share revenue, potentially benefiting independent authors with quicker distribution.

But, to a lover of audiobooks deeply entrenched in another platform, the deluge of audiobook recommendations might get tiresome. For instance, Google Play Store and its audiobooks, which integrate seamlessly with Google Assistant smart displays, might find synergy here. Yet, Spotify's new venture could create a formidable competitor for market leader Amazon's Audible.

While details about the acquisition price remain undisclosed, Spotify stands to profit every time a Findaway-distributed book is streamed. They'll also have to shell out royalties to other audiobook publishers and authors. The competition is fierce. Audible, with its wide range of exclusive content and Audible Originals, represents a significant challenge.

The Google Play Store, Apple Books, Storytel, and Scribd all pose Competition, each offering diverse content and user-friendly interfaces. Spotify counters by partnering with publishers like Podium and Bloomsbury, attracting independent authors, and focusing on unique audio experiences. The audiobook market is booming, with a forecasted CAGR of 15.57% by 2030, reaching USD 17.18 billion. Spotify must continuously innovate to hold its ground against giants like Audible and other emerging platforms.
