Telecommunications services provided by MTS and MGTS have reported disruptions.

On July 4, 2025, a temporary technical malfunction led to widespread outages for MTS and MGTS, two major telecommunications providers in Russia. The disruptions were particularly noticeable in regions such as Perm Krai, Moscow, Chuvash Republic, Moscow Oblast, and Belgorod Oblast.

The issues manifested as HTTP 502 errors, detected around 14:00 Moscow time, causing a significant number of user complaints. According to reports, MTS received 6.2 thousand complaints, while MGTS recorded 4.5 thousand.

Despite the impact, the precise cause of these failures has not been publicly disclosed. The problem affected a major part of Russia's mobile network and was tracked on platforms monitoring service disruptions. Notably, the outage was temporary, and the monitoring site "Crashing.RF" resumed normal operations after the incident.

This incident comes amidst ongoing efforts and challenges in Russia's telecom sector, which is actively expanding 4G and 5G infrastructure with government backing and investments by leading providers, including MTS and others. However, technical glitches and service interruptions can occur during such expansions and operational stresses, especially across critical regions such as Moscow and its surrounding oblasts.

In the aftermath of the outage, Downdetector received a total of 2400 complaints about MTS over a 24-hour period, while Sboi.ru registered over 6300 complaints about MGTS during the same timeframe. The main complaints about MTS were related to general operator outages, accounting for 93% of all complaints. The main regions reporting issues with MTS included Perm Krai (11%), Moscow (10%), Chuvash Republic (7%), Moscow Oblast (6%), and Belgorod Oblast (5%).

At 15:10 Moscow time, Downdetector received 5829 complaints about MTS in an hour. A small percentage of complaints about both MTS and MGTS were related to mobile app issues (5% for MTS, not specified for MGTS). A negligible percentage of complaints about MGTS were related to the personal cabinet (1%).

As of the time of writing, there are ongoing reports of mobile connectivity issues with MTS. It is hoped that the providers will provide a detailed explanation regarding the root cause of the outage soon, ensuring the continued reliability of their services.

The technology-related issues experienced by MTS and MGTS on July 4, 2025, extended to various regions in Russia such as Perm Krai, Moscow, Chuvash Republic, Moscow Oblast, and Belgorod Oblast, causing widespread HTTP 502 errors and numerous user complaints. These problems came amidst ongoing expansions of 4G and 5G infrastructure in Russia's telecom sector, where technological glitches can occur during operational stresses.
