Tesla Launches Long-Range Model 3 Variant and Announces Six-Seater Model Y L in China
Tesla has made significant strides in the Chinese market, announcing the launch of a new Model 3 variant and the upcoming release of a six-seater Model Y L. The new Model 3 variant, a single-motor long-range rear-wheel-drive model, boasts a top speed of 200 km/h and can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.2 seconds. It comes equipped with a 78.4 kWh battery from LG Energy Solution, making it the longest-range Tesla model to date, with a CLTC range of 830 kilometers in China.
The new Model 3 variant is available in China at a starting price of RMB 269,500 ($37,490). Tesla is offering incentives for the Model 3, including five years of interest-free financing, a RMB 8,000 discount on paint, and a RMB 8,000 insurance subsidy, but excludes the highest-priced performance version of the sedan.
In addition to the new Model 3 variant, Tesla has announced that the Model Y L, a six-seater variant, will be launched in China this fall. The Model Y L has a range of 751 kilometers, powered by an 82 kWh LG ternary NMC battery pack. It features a unique "2+2+2" seating layout with executive-style second-row captain chairs for enhanced comfort, and a 3040 mm wheelbase, about 6 inches longer than the regular Model Y, to accommodate the third row.
The Model Y L will be priced approximately at RMB 339,000 (~$47,180 - $47,200 USD). The estimated delivery date for the Model Y L in China is September 2025.
Tesla's Model Y sales in China have resumed a decline in July, with a 17.15% year-on-year decrease in sales for the Model Y, contributing to a 6.32% year-on-year decrease in Tesla's sales in China in the first seven months of 2022, with 304,027 vehicles delivered, according to data compiled by the publication. Despite this, the Model 3 sales in China have shown a positive trend, with a 26.54% year-on-year increase, selling 101,770 units from January to July.
The Model Y L is currently exclusive to China but has been spotted testing in Europe, suggesting a potential global rollout in the future. This model, with its long-range capabilities, comfortable interior, and expanded seating, is designed primarily for Chinese families and is set to commence deliveries in China in September.
