Tesla Model 3 Turn Signal Stalk Retrofit Now Available in China
Tesla Model 3 owners in China can now opt for a retrofit that restores the traditional turn signal stalk, which was removed in the 2023 refresh of the Model 3. The retrofit, priced at approximately $350 USD including parts and installation, is available through Tesla service centers for Model 3 Highland vehicles manufactured after February 7, 2025.
This move follows customer backlash against the removal of the traditional stalk in favour of steering wheel-mounted touch controls. Tesla had faced criticism for this change, with some owners finding the new controls less intuitive and less conducive to quick, safe manoeuvring.
The retrofit, which targets cars manufactured after February 7, 2025, was introduced in China at 2,499 yuan (~$350 USD). It involves replacing the steering wheel and related components to restore the traditional left turn signal stalk. The retrofit requires professional installation at a Tesla Service Center.
As of late August 2025, Tesla has not yet released the turn signal stalk retrofit or accessory for the Model 3 in the US or Canada. However, Tesla has permanently restored the turn signal stalk on new Model 3s in China, suggesting the retrofit may eventually come to North America. No official announcement or pricing has been made for that region as of the latest reports.
Interestingly, Tesla chose to retain the stalk in the refreshed Model Y, indicating the return of the stalk likely reflects customer preference and usability concerns.
For Model 3 owners in China, the retrofit option is expected to become available in mid-September. It is worth noting that customers must surrender their original steering wheel components during the retrofit, and the order is non-refundable once completed.
The referral link for new Tesla buyers can provide three months of Full Self-Driving (FSD) if used. Support for earlier Model 3 vehicles will follow at a later date.
