Tesla Delays Release of Affordable Electric Car to Q4 2025

Tesla's plans for a more affordable electric vehicle (EV) have taken a slight detour, with the release date now pushed back to the fourth quarter (Q4) of 2025. Initially planned for mid-2025, the company announced delays during their recent earnings call, aiming for a launch late in Q4 2025.

The anticipated vehicle, often referred to as the "Tesla Model 2" or a low-cost Model Y variant, is now expected to enter production and become available around Q4 2025. Some sources mention plans for a launch event or shareholder event in November 2025.

The car will be more compact and affordable, with stripped-down features compared to current models. It targets city drivers and those wanting a budget-friendly Tesla.

A video of the test vehicle, shared by X by Drivegreenlivegreen, provides a close-up of the outside and inside of the car. The video reveals visual changes such as the removal of the panoramic glass roof and the use of fabric in seats. The lightbars featured on the new Model Y will not be included in the upcoming affordable Tesla EV.

Riz Akhtar, the founder of carloop, an Australian company specializing in EV data, insight reports, and trends, has shared his insights on the impact of the affordable Tesla EV on the Australian market. Akhtar, a mechanical engineer who started carloop after spending 7 years building transport infrastructure, currently drives a red Tesla Model 3 and has a passion for EVs. He aims to reduce transport emissions in Australia.

According to Akhtar, the cheaper Tesla model, if released, could help Tesla maintain its market lead in Australia due to competition from more affordable options. The test car, a blue Tesla SUV, appears to be shorter in length than the standard Tesla Model Y, with a length between 4.4 and 4.6 meters, as compared to the standard Model Y's length of about 4.8 meters.

Tesla's CEO Elon Musk joked that the affordable model may resemble the Model Y during an investors' question time. The production timeline for the affordable Tesla EV has been pushed back due to the company focusing on ramping up deliveries of its Model Y before US credits expire.

The Model Y currently starts at $58,900. Multiple mentions of the cheaper Tesla model have been made at the company's earnings calls over the last few quarters. The exact specifications and pricing of the affordable Tesla EV are yet to be announced.
